A revamped recycling service is being rolled out across Barrow in a bid to slash the amount of rubbish the town sends to landfill.

Major changes and improvements are on the way next month allowing Barrowvians to recycle much more waste at the kerbside.

Households will be getting brand new red bags for collecting cardboard and plastic while existing green boxes for cans and glass, plastic bags for newspapers and magazines and garden waste bins will continue to be collected as usual.

Barrow Borough Council is conducting the roll out from March 16 - May 18 to encourage people to boost the town's recycling rate and show they 'Love Barrow'.

And with residents recycling more they'll soon find less rubbish is being put in the standard bin so the standard size will be replaced with a smaller bin.

The rollout is being arranged to give people time to get used to using their extra recycling capacity before the standard sized bin is removed, and help will be at hand to ensure Barrowvians make an easy transition to the revamped collections.

Barrow Borough Council and Resource Cumbria officers are going to be out and about talking to people and offering hints and tips on how to get the most from the new service

Deputy leader of the council, Ken Williams, said: "With this new service we are not reducing rubbish collection, we are increasing recycling capacity.

"The system is convenient and easy to use and I'm sure it will soon just become second nature for people to use the various recycling bags and boxes rather than simply dumping everything in a bin.

"Barrow has a wonderful community spirit and I'm hoping everybody in the town will come together in seizing the opportunity this new service provides to massively increase our recycling rates."

A leaflet providing details about the new recycling service is being delivered to all households, along with a calendar informing people when each of their recycling containers and their new refuse bin will be collected.
