At school

Reduce

  • Make your own recycled paper. Visit http://www.make-stuff.com/recycling/paper.html to find out how!
  • Introduce e-mail distribution of newsletters to parents and post other information on your school`s website.
  • Encourage children to stay for school lunches. Packed lunches often contain overly packaged foods.

Reuse

  • Use both sides of the paper when writing, drawing or photocopying. Set up a collection tray in each classroom for paper that`s only been used on one side.
  • Reuse old card, coloured paper and glossy magazines in artwork
  • Hold a car boot sale or toy swap and raise money for your school.

Recycle

  • Set up a system for collecting used paper from classrooms and offices and taking it to the main recycling bin at the end of each day or week.
  • Collect old aluminium cans (e.g. by putting a bin next to drinks vending machines). Your school could make money from them!
  • Bring old copies of Yellow Pages to school for recycling - you can get environmental educational materials in return!
  • Set up a composting scheme to get rid of everything from grass clippings to tea bags. Resource Cumbria can provide composting bins to schools free of charge.
