Unwanted Furniture

Furniture and other household items can often be reused in their current state so don`t even need to be recycled or sent to waste treatment facilities Our Other Ways to Reuse webpage has details of useful sales and give-away websites, and our Ways to Reuse webpage has links to local Freegle groups where you can donate and pick up pre-loved items for free.

Charities and furniture reuse organisations

There are quite a few furniture reuse organisations and Charities who will collect and make good use of your unwanted household furniture and white goods. Follow the link to see our list of Cumbrian furniture reuse organisations. For a list of charity shops ad other reuse organisations visit our Charity Shop and Reuse Map of Cumbria or visit the charity retail association to locate your nearest shop.

Repairing, refurbishing and upcycling

Why not have a go at "upcycling" your old furniture and give it a new lease of life through a lick of paint or a fresh piece of fabric. All you need is little inspiration and access to some DIY supplies. There`s plenty of `how to` videos online, just search for `upcycling furniture` for inspiration to suit your style.

There are a number of local Repair Cafes too where you can take broken items. At a repair café local volunteers will try to identify the problem with your item, show you how to repair it and help you or actually make the repair themselves during the event. The events page on this website has details of some of these.

You could even get your supplies for a small fee from your local scrap store such as Ragtag Arts Scrapstore in Kendal

If you can`t sell it or give it away ...

For a small fee your local Council may be able to arrange a bulky waste collection to take away your unwanted items
