Don't let the environment pay the penalty during the World Cup

Nervous fans taking their places in front of their TV`s for each tension-filled 90 minutes could offer a summer bonanza of recyclable materials including paper and cardboard packaging, cans, glass and plastic bottles.

Recycling whilst watching the World Cup has never been easier. Here are the Resource Cumbria`s top five tips:

  • Make space for a recycling container - so it`s as easy to recycle as it is to throw it away.
  • Use your council`s doorstep recycling collection service if you have one.
  • Use the interactive map to find your local recycling centre.
  • Don`t forget that your local supermarket probably has recycling banks - so drop before you shop.
  • When you head out to stock up on World Cup essentials, choose a durable bag to hold your cans and bottles or reuse your carrier bags.

Furthermore, every year enough food to fill Wembley Stadium 10 times is thrown out in the UK, most of which could be eaten. With many of us planning World Cup parties and barbeques over the next few weeks, we may find we have more food around than usual and end up throwing it away. Resource Cumbria has advice and tips to help give extra time to the food you buy.

  • Buffet and barbeque leftovers make great packed lunches for work or school the next day. Cold roast meat is delicious with pickle or chutney or add a dollop of leftover dip to a cold burger for a tasty lunch the next day. Visit lovefoodhatewaste.com/recipes for a tasty topped BBQ burger recipe.
  • Most fruit and vegetables can be kept in the fridge to maximise freshness - however bananas - the sportsman`s staple - are best kept in the fruit bowl.
  • Potato wedges are always a favourite of kids and adults alike, are easy to make and use up those extra potatoes at the bottom of the bag. Just chop some potatoes into wedges, add some oil and put into the oven for 25 mins. Cover with leftover cheese and strips of bacon or any cold meat like salami or ham. Try a drizzle of pesto or chilli sauce and serve them with salad and any pickles from the cupboard.
  • Pop leftovers in the fridge as soon as they are cold. When you take them out of the fridge, eat them immediately or reheat straight away.
