Cumbria celebrates Home Composting Week with cut price compost bins 8 -14 May

Households across Cumbria are to get the chance to take home cut price compost bins this week as part of an effort to get more people composting.

Special composting roadshows offering seriously subsidised bins are being run by Resource Cumbria, the partnership of Cumbria County Council and the district and borough councils working together to improve the county`s performance dealing with domestic waste.

The idea is to stop green waste from the garden and kitchen being needlessly buried in landfill sites where it takes up valuable space and decomposes producing the greenhouse gas, methane.

The roadshows are being held on:

Tuesday 9th May at the Corn Market, Penrith town centre.

Wednesday 10th May at Asda supermarket on Chandler Way, Carlisle.

Thursday 11th May at Asda supermarket on Walney Road in Barrow.

Friday 12th May in the Market Band Stand, King Street, Whitehaven town centre.

Saturday 13th May at the Sustainability Saturday event in Methodist Church Hall garden at Kirkby Lonsdale garden between 10.30am and 1.30pm.

Sunday 14th May at the plant sale in Mawbray Village Hall, Mawbray, Maryport

All events are 10am onwards unless otherwise stated and roadshows will display the three different subsidised bins available and feature advice on home composting.

The smallest bin is the 330 litre available for just £6 when it would normally cost £39.99.

The next size up is the 440 litre which will cost £10 when it should £78.95.

The largest size is the 800 litre available for £25 instead of £120.95.
