Big Babies on Blencathra

Blencathra babies

Big babies will be walking up Blencathra in an effort to promote the use of real nappies.

The oversized infants are all either real nappy users, retailers or supporters who have joined forces to raise awareness of the all round advantages of using real cotton nappies rather than disposables in the run up to national Real Nappy Week which starts Monday, 20th June.

The too-big toddlers will tackle the mountain wearing their own real nappies, leaving at around 11am from the White Horse Inn, Scales Village, at the bottom of Blencathra off the A66, on Monday, 13th June.

Real nappy use is on the increase across the country, but many parents are not yet aware that using cotton nappies can be more environmentally friendly and more cost effective, saving a family around £500 a year. Modern cotton nappies are also easy to wash and use and do not take up valuable space in landfill sites.

An average infant will produce up to tonne of nappy waste before being toilet trained. Using disposable plastic nappies not only takes up valuable space at a time when landfill sites are already filling up too fast, but it also adds to council tax bills because of what it costs local authorities to dispose of the waste.

Real nappies can be re-used time and time again and even passed on to other children, so families who have more than one child using real nappies can save money and make a significant contribution to the environment.

In addition to the big babies` walk up Blencathra on June 13, there will be a number of real nappy road shows where parents can find out more about the benefits of using real nappies. A free real nappy trial will be available to up to 15 applicants at each of these events, as well as the opportunity to ask questions and see the nappies on display in our exhibition trailer.
